Diversified Communications is a privately held, family-owned business that operates in the broadcasting, exhibition, publishing and emerging-media industries. Diversified Communications began with broadcasting in 1949 when former Maine Governor Horace A. Hildreth acquired WABI-AM radio in Bangor, Maine. In 1953, WABI-TV became the first television broadcasting station in Maine and a CBS affiliate in 1955. In October 1976, Diversified Communications purchased WCJB-TV (ABC) in Gainesville, Fla., and then acquired WPDE-TV (ABC) in Florence, S.C., in 1985.
