The initiative to establish Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Ltd was undertaken by the Federal Military Government under the leadership of General Yakubu Gowon. The idea came to fruition in October 1969 when the government invited 16 vehicle-manufacturing companies in the world to establish a vehicle assembly plant in Nigeria. It was 12 years prior that Peugeot cars made an entry into Nigeria when individuals imported about 100 units of the Peugeot 403 model into the country.
