Engaged in pellet processing, United Taconite has a location in Forbes, Minn. Located in Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range, United Taconite also maintains mining facilities in Eveleth, Minn. Previously known as EVTAC Mining Company, United Taconite produced its first pellets in 1965. It was idled in May 2003 after filing for bankruptcy protection. The mine's assets were acquired in December of that year by a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs and Laiwu Steel Group. Cliffs Mining Company is the managing agent.
